The violence was triggered by a social media post. A Hindu youth had called for starting an ‘I Love Mahadev’ campaign in response to an ‘I Love Mohammad’ post. Enraged by this, some fanatic Muslims stormed into his shop, vandalised it, and set it ablaze. The youth managed to escape and thus survived. CCTV footage of the arson and vandalism has been recovered.
More than 8 vehicles, including 2 belonging to the Police, were torched in the incident. Several people were injured. To regain control of Bahiyal, the Police had to deploy large reinforcements and use tear gas. Around 60 individuals have been detained in connection with rioting and unlawful assembly. The Police have appealed to residents not to post inflammatory content on social media and to cooperate with the investigation.
