(Cherry-picking means selecting only those facts that suit one’s ideological agenda to push forward a biased narrative.)

New Delhi – The staunch anti-India and anti-Hindu news website The Wire has, through one of its articles, portrayed India as a ‘Muslim-hostile and human rights–violating country’. To push this narrative, it cited writings of anti-India organisations and journalists, attempting to create the impression that the situation in India is not just negative, but horrifying.
At first glance, one might think the article would counter the unfairly painted image of India. But instead, it begins with – ‘The Narendra Modi government frequently posits India as a ‘Vishwaguru’ or world leader. How the world sees India is often lost in this branding exercise. Outside India, global voices are monitoring and critiquing human rights violations in India and the rise of Hindutva. We present here monthly highlights of what a range of actors – from UN experts and civil society groups to international media and parliamentarians of many countries – are saying about the state of India’s democracy’.
Half-baked facts and misleading claims in the article
1. Reuters’ baseless allegation that ‘the Indian Government is censoring X’
The article first cites international agency Reuters by referring to its monthly roundup of August 1–31, 2025. Journalists Munsif Vengattil, Arpan Chaturvedi and Aditya Kalra had reported on the legal battle between X and the Indian government on “tightened internet censorship in India”. The Wire quotes, “Between March 2024 and June 2025 “at least 1,400 posts or accounts” were ordered to be removed”. (In reality, the Government of India has ordered takedowns only of content threatening national sovereignty, law and order—often linked to jihadi terrorism, Khalistani propaganda, etc. While international outlets cry ‘censorship’, The Wire happily amplifies it. – Editor)

2. Al Jazeera’s report on the ban of 25 books in Kashmir included in the article
The Wire next quotes Al Jazeera, in which it says that the latter ‘highlighted fears of greater censorship in Kashmir, pointing out that the Government recently banned 25 books. The Government claims the books glorify terrorism while critics of the ban see it as a particularly sweeping attempt by New Delhi to assert control over academia in Kashmir’. (Why doesn’t The Wire ever highlight how films like ‘Udaipur Files’ and ‘The Bengal Files’, which depict atrocities against Hindus, were aggressively opposed ? Clearly, its reporting is not only biased but portrays a selective concern only for alleged Muslim victimhood. – Editor)
3. Ridiculous attempt to drag PM Modi’s US relations using Financial Times
The Wire also cites Financial Times journalist Sushant Singh’s article on Trump’s tariff war on India. Singh linked Modi’s economic stewardship and diplomatic choices to past controversies, saying, ‘It is Modi’s lowest American moment since he was denied a visa in 2005, due to his role as Gujarat’s chief minister during a wave of anti-Muslim violence in 2002’. (This is like trying to graft a banyan tree’s bark onto a peepal tree—absurd ! Both Financial Times and The Wire only expose the poverty of their ideological journalism. – Editor)
4. The article further notes that India opposed the international tribunal’s decision on the Indus Waters dispute with Pakistan. (The Wire’s hidden agenda here is to portray India as a violator of international law, conveniently ignoring that the Pahalgam terror attack had prompted India’s stern stance. – Editor)
5. The Wire also referenced the US State Department’s annual report on human rights in India, along with views of rabidly anti-India and anti-Hindu groups such as ‘Indian American Muslim Council’, ‘South Asia Solidarity Group’, and ‘Hindus for Human Rights and Others’.
Gauri Lankesh reference
The Wire even included an interview with Rollo Romig, author of a book on journalist Gauri Lankesh’s murder. In excerpts quoted, Romig describes her killing as emblematic of ‘the dysfunction and capture of India’s entire judicial system from policing to trial. The increasing criminalisation of all dissent’. (The Wire’s descent into maligning India’s judiciary shows how low it can go. Strict action is needed. – Editorial) |
Editorial PerspectiveIf Hindus truly want to recognise the media outlets, newspapers, NGOs, and journalists relentlessly weaving anti-India narratives, then this article of The Wire must be read—for it exposes them thoroughly. |
