(Eidgah means an open space reserved for prayer, while mazar means the tomb of an Islamic Pir or Fakir)

Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) – The Yogi Government has launched a major drive in the Districts of Uttar Pradesh bordering Nepal. Under this drive, action is being taken against illegal mosques and madarasas using bulldozers. Recently, 225 madarasas, 30 mosques, 25 mazars and 6 Eidgahs in 7 Districts have been razed to the ground. This drive was conducted across Districts bordering Nepal such as Maharajganj, Siddharthnagar, Balrampur, Shravasti, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Kheri and Pilibhit.

1.On May 14th , 29 illegal madarasas, 9 mosques and 7 religious places were demolished by bulldozers in Maharajganj. Action was taken against 30 madarasas, 10 mazars and 1 Eidgah in Balrampur District. In Shravasti District, biggest action against illegal madarasas was taken i.e. against 110 of such structures, along with 1 mosque, 5 religious places and 2 idgahs.
2.In Bahraich, 13 madarasas, 8 mosques, 2 tombs (makbara) and 1 Eidgah were demolished. In Lakhimpur Kheri, 8 madarasas, 2 mosques, 1 religious place and 1 Eidgah were bulldozed. In Pilibhit, 1 illegal mosque was demolished.
3.The drive is being carried out with the aim of removing illegal encroachments and ensuring security in the border areas, a Government official said. In April 2025, the Yogi Government also demolished 89 illegal structures in this area using bulldozers.
