Myanmar earthquake death toll rises to more than 2,700

Naypyidaw (Myanmar) – The death-toll of the Myanmar earthquake has crossed 2,700 as informed by the Myanmar Government. More than 3,900 have been injured in the quake. 270 individuals are still missing. After the earthquake a National Mourning of 7 days was declared by the government. The National Flag will be at Half-mast till the 6th of April, in homage to those who died in the earthquake reported the government spokesperson. On the 28thof March Myanmar and Thailand suffered an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude. This was the severest quake in the past 200 years. America’s ‘Geological Survey’ has expressed its fear that the death toll could be more than 10,000.

1.Myanmar’s Mandalay Province was the epicentre of the quake. Mandalay, having a population of more than 17 lakh, is Myanmar’s 2nd largest city.

2.Most of the citizens slept on the streets for 3 consecutive nights as their homes were destroyed. The people are scared of the aftershocks that happen after the earthquake

3.As the communication between most parts of the country is disrupted; the exact information of the destruction is not yet known.

India’s aid to Myanmar

Dr S Jaishankar, India’s Foreign Minister said, Indian Navy’s warships INS Satpura and INS Savitri have under the ‘Operation Brahma’ has been sent with 30 Tonnes of aid to Yangon port. Along with this India has sent a team consisting of 118 medical personnel to help the victims of the disaster. This team has reached Myanmar.
