Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar participated in the ‘Diamond States Summit’ organised by the news channel News18 India. During the event, while speaking about the Muslim reservation policy being implemented by the Karnataka Congress Government, he made a statement about amending the Constitution. Following this, he has faced widespread criticism across the country. The issue was also raised in Parliament, causing an uproar. In the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister JP Nadda stated that the Constitution clearly specifies that reservations cannot be granted based on religion, but Congress wants to amend the Constitution to provide reservations for Muslims.

What did DK Shivakumar say ?

When asked about Muslim reservations during the event, DK Shivakumar said, “Let us see, let us wait. Whatever decision comes from the Court, we have at least made a start. I know that (if reservation is given to Muslims) everyone will go to Court. We will have to wait for good day, that day will come. Many changes are happening, the Constitution is evolving, and there are certain decisions that transform the Constitution.”

Following this statement, the BJP strongly criticised Congress, accusing it of appeasement politics. The BJP claimed that Congress aims to amend the Constitution to grant reservations to Muslims, calling it illegal and unconstitutional.

BJP is distorting my statement – DK Shivakumar’s clarification

Amid the controversy, DK Shivakumar clarified that while the media was reporting the incident correctly, the BJP was misrepresenting his statement. He accused the BJP of being known for spreading fake news. He explained, “I only mentioned that there have been instances where Constitutional amendments were made based on Court judgments. I never said, ‘We will amend the Constitution.’ We are a national party, and I understand what the Constitution means. I said that such decisions have been taken many times while changing the Constitution.”

Editorial Perspective

The Congress has previously amended the Constitution not for Hindus but for Muslims. The Shah Bano case is infamous in this regard. Therefore, it is not new for Congress to make such moves. During the Emergency, Congress forcibly inserted the words ‘Secularism’ and ‘Socialism’ into the Constitution’s preamble for political gains. Tomorrow, Congress might even amend the Constitution to declare India an ‘Islamic nation.’ Before it is too late, India must become a ‘Hindu Rashtra.’
