Over 31,000 Cases Registered Under the POCSO Act in Kerala in the Last 8 Years

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The increasing cases of sexual abuse against minors in Kerala have become a serious concern. Since 2016, reports have revealed that 44 victims of rape have committed suicide. In the last eight years, more than 31,000 cases have been registered under the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.

Concerns from the Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights –

The Commission’s chairperson expressed concerns, stating, “Victims need proper psychological support. Children who experience such trauma often suffer from severe depression, which negatively impacts their mental health.” The Commission has directed all relevant departments to provide maximum support to the victims.

Government Data (2016-2024)

According to official records, from June 2016 to 2024, Kerala registered 31,171 POCSO cases, leading to 28,728 arrests. Reports indicate a significant rise in sexual abuse cases against minors since 2022.

Yearly Increase in Cases

  • From 2016 to 2021, approximately 3,000 cases were reported annually.
  • In 2022, this number surged to 4,518 cases.
  • In 2023, it further increased to 4,641 cases.
  • In 2024, 4,594 cases were recorded.

Shocking Case in Pathanamthitta

Recently, a Dalit girl from Pathanamthitta alleged that she was sexually assaulted by 62 individuals, including her relatives, teachers, and friends. Her complaint sparked discussions across the state, revealing not only a surge in sexual abuse cases against minors but also an increase in suicides among the victims.
