A Major Challenge for the Administration
Prayagraj, January 6 – Various Akhada saints and lakhs of devotees have arrived at the Maha Kumbha venue; however, critical works such as toilets, water supply, electrification, and sand levelling remain incomplete. The Maha Kumbha is set to commence on January 13, leaving the administration with less than a week to complete these tasks.
1. Condition of Toilets
Temporary plastic toilets are being erected in large numbers across the Kumbha Mela grounds. Several private contractors have been assigned the task due to the high number of toilets required. However, many of these installations remain pending. To manage waste from these toilets, pits are being dug in the sand, and 3,000-litre tanks are being installed. The contractors are tasked with regularly emptying these tanks.
2. Power and Water Connections for Akhadas Still Pending
Many Akhadas are yet to receive electricity connections. Work on erecting electricity poles is ongoing, with machinery being used to dig pits in the sand for the poles. Each machine installs around 150 poles daily, but thousands more are still required. Additionally, some Akhadas have yet to receive water supply. Iron pipes are being laid in the sand to ensure water distribution, but this work is still in progress.
3. Other Pending Works
Sand levelling at multiple locations along the River Ganga’s banks is still underway. Subsequent arrangements can only be made once the levelling is completed. The construction of grand entrance gates, temporary police outposts, and wall painting for the Mela is also incomplete. Completing all these tasks within the next week poses a significant challenge for the administration.
