Conditional nod from Calcutta High Court for Shriram Navami procession in Howrah, West Bengal

  • No permission to carry weapons in the procession

  • Police had denied permission earlier

Kolkata – After the West Bengal Police denied permission to Hindu organisations like Anjani Putra Sena, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and Durga Vahini to carry out a Shriram Navami procession in Howrah, these organisations filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court. During the hearing, the Court granted conditional permission for the procession.

1. While granting permission, the Court laid down certain conditions. The procession can take place on the traditional route in Howrah; however, carrying weapons will not be allowed. Additionally, motorbike rallies cannot be organised, and the participants must adhere to the Police’s guidelines.

2. There has been a tradition of organising a Shriram Navami procession in Howrah for the past 15 years. However, due to incidents of violence in the last two years, the Police denied permission for the procession on G.T. Road citing security concerns.

3. Activists from the Hindu organisations claim that the administration has imposed a ban on the procession for the second consecutive year. They question whether the State Government has an issue with the chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

4. However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has appealed to maintain peace during Shriram Navami. She said that everyone has the right to worship, but riots should not occur.

Editorial Perspectives

  • If the Court can grant permission, why can’t the Police ? This clearly indicates that Bengal’s anti-Hindu Trinamool Congress regime is deliberately trying to ban Hindu religious processions !
  • Please note that the Police, who deny permission for Hindu festivals, never seem to deny permission for Muslim festivals !
