Bangladesh starts the process of acquitting a Jihadi terrorist

Accused of murdering a US citizen

Dhaka (Bangladesh) – The interim Government in Bangladesh has initiated the process of acquitting Major Syed Zia-ul-Haq, a suspended Bangladesh army officer. He is associated with the Jihadist terrorist organization Al-Qaeda and is wanted by the United States. In December 2021, the United States had announced a reward of $ 5 million (Rs 42 crore) for information on him and another terrorist Akram. Both of them were found to be involved in the terrorist attack in Dhaka in February 2015, in which, a US citizen Avijit Roy was killed, while his wife Rafida Bonya Ahmed was injured.

Bangladesh revokes former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s passport

Bangladesh’s interim Government has revoked the passports of 97 people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, all of whom are accused of their alleged involvement in the killings that took place during the violence in July 2024. The Government said that the Indian Government is aware that Sheikh Hasina’s passport has been revoked and that the Indian Government has already said that Hasina has been issued travel documents.

Editorial Perspective

Bangladesh has now become a ‘terrorist country’. To protect itself from it, India needs to take an aggressive, and not a defensive stance.
