Kanpur’s female mayor reopens 3 temples in muslim-majority area

Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh) – Kanpur’s mayor, Pramila Pandey, recently discovered Hindu temples in muslim- majority areas that had been closed for several years. The administration revealed that she identified five such temples, with over 100 closed temples reported across the city. On 6.1.2025, mayor Pandey reopened three Shiva temples located in the Hiramanpurwa area, a muslim-majority locality. The Police accompanied her during the process.

These temples had been shut for decades, were in a dilapidated state, and their idols were found damaged, with Shivlings missing. Mayor Pandey declared that these temples would be cleaned and secured. She also confirmed that legal action would be taken against encroachers.

Opposition from muslim clerics to the mayor’s drive

Previously, muslim clerics had requested the Police Commissioner to halt the mayor’s campaign to identify temples in muslim-majority areas. Addressing this, mayor Pramila Pandey stated, “All my actions are strictly within the framework of the law.”
