Bangladeshi SIM cards being sold in Murshidabad (Bengal)

  • Cards active within 5 km within the border

  • Problem due to absence of technology to find foreign SIM’s location

  • The price of a SIM card is Rs 5,000

Berhampore (Bengal) – Information has come to light that Bangladeshi SIM cards are being sold in Srirampur village of Murshidabad District of the State, which is located on the Bangladesh border. These SIM cards have become a headache for the Border Security Force (BSF) and the BSF officials said that there is no technology available to find the location of these cards. Since the network of Bangladeshi telecommunications service providers is available in India up to 5 km along the India-Bangladesh border, Bangladeshi smugglers are able to use it. Since these SIM cards are easily available in Indian villages along the border, they are becoming more dangerous for India.

1. A local Police officer said that recently, while some smugglers were fleeing to the Bangladesh border, the Police recovered a mobile phone which had been dropped by the smugglers. It had a Bangladeshi SIM in it. From this, the Police got information that foreign SIMs are active in Indian territory.

2. Deputy Inspector General of Police, South Bengal Frontier of BSF, N.K. Pandey said that tracking down smugglers using Bangladeshi networks has become the biggest problem.

3. According to local media, the cost of a SIM card is Rs 5,000. In border villages, these SIM cards are available at grocery stores, and they can also be delivered to the desired location if required by a third party. This eliminates the risk of anyone getting arrested.

Pathetic condition of India-Bangladesh international border in Murshidabad

Here, instead of a fence, there are single pillars at certain distance. Murshidabad District has a 125 km long border with Bangladesh. Of this, 42 km is land, the rest is the border of the Padma river. There is no fence in the 20.61 km area of Nadia District adjacent to Murshidabad. In the last one and a half months, 52 infiltrators have been arrested from this area. Last Wednesday, 10 Bangladeshis and 5 Indian brokers were arrested.

Some local villagers said that there is a village called Durlabhpur on the banks of the Padma river. A large number of infiltrators have settled here. Their identity cannot be distinguished as their lifestyle, speech and dressing are similar to the people on the Indian side. Since these people are relatives of local Indians, the Panchayat also does not provide information about them to the authorities.
