New Delhi – Women must understand that the laws created for them are intended for their welfare. These laws are not meant to threaten, dominate, or harass their husbands, the Supreme Court observed while hearing a petition. In this instance, the Court, while deciding a divorce case, ordered the husband to pay a permanent alimony of Rs 12 crore to his divorced wife as a final resolution.
Hindu marriage Is not a ‘Business Venture’
During the hearing, the wife claimed that her husband owned several businesses in India and the United States and possessed assets worth Rs 5,000 crore. She also stated that he had paid Rs 500 crore as alimony to his first wife after their separation.
In response, the Court remarked that a husband cannot be bound to provide indefinite financial support to an estranged wife based on his current financial status. Hindu marriage is not a business venture; it is considered the foundation of a family. Alimony is not a means to financially equalize the separated husband and wife. The provision for alimony is designed to ensure that a dependent woman can live with dignity.
