Ottawa (Canada) – Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has resigned following disagreements with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on policy matters. Freeland was scheduled to present a report in Parliament on the country’s declining economy, but she submitted her resignation just hours before. Prime Minister Trudeau has been criticized for opening the treasury to fund various plans, a move that 56-year- old Freeland opposed. “Given the worsening economic crisis, Canada cannot afford this,” she remarked.

In her resignation letter to Trudeau, Freeland stated that they had been at odds for weeks regarding the best path forward for Canada. “On December 13th, you informed me that you intended to reassign me from the finance portfolio to another department. After careful consideration, I realized that stepping down from the cabinet entirely was the best and only viable option for me,” she wrote.
