New Delhi – In an interview conducted by ANI editor Smita Prakash, retired Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud addressed a statement made by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. When asked about Gandhi’s remark that “even the opposition has to take on the judiciary’s role now,” Justice Chandrachud stated, “The judiciary exists to review the law, and in a democracy, political opposition holds a distinct place. The judiciary is not the opposition, so I have no intention of debating with Rahul Gandhi. I wish to stay away from judicial matters at the moment. I want to teach and engage with the youth,” he added.
Recently, Rahul Gandhi remarked that “we are single-handedly working on behalf of the media, investigative agencies, and the judiciary. This is the reality of India.” When asked about this, the former Chief Justice responded, “There is often a misconception that the judiciary should play the role of the opposition in the legislature, which is not true. We are here to examine the laws.”
Using the judiciary as a platform for targeting others! – Former Chief Justice
The former Chief Justice further commented, “The judiciary has been entrusted with the responsibility of examining whether the actions of the executive are in accordance with the law and consistent with the Constitution. However, some individuals attempt to use the judiciary as a platform for targeting others and turning the courts into a site for political opposition.”
