Imphal, Manipur – The situation in Manipur has once again become grim. On 10th September 2024, students marched towards the Raj Bhavan (Governor’s residence) protesting against the deteriorating law and order situation in the State. In the ensuing clashes between students and security forces, over 50 people were injured. Many services across the state have been shut down since the last five days. A curfew has been imposed in three districts. The Union Government has ordered the deployment of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) throughout Manipur, which includes around 2,000 soldiers.
The students are demanding the removal of the State’s Director General of Police, Deputy Director General, and Security Advisor, accusing them of failing to handle the worsening law and order situation. While marching towards the Raj Bhavan, the demonstrators were reported to have raised slogans. Police informed that demonstrators also pelted stones at security personnel, forcing the police to use tear gas shells to disperse the mob.
On Tuesday evening, the Manipur Government issued a revised order declaring deferment of various services in five districts in the background of the students’ agitations. Besides, the State Government has announced the suspension of internet services across the State for five days.
