Ayodhya – On 22nd July, the Allahabad High Court heard a PIL seeking the removal of a liquor shop located near the Shravan Shram Mandir Khiharan, a temple of Deity Shiva in Milkipur. The High Court has sought a reply from the District Excise Officer of Ayodhya in this regard. This Public Interest Litigation has been filed by Swami Krishnacharya alias Kali Prasad Mishra. On their behalf, advocate Harendra Singh and advocate Satish Kumar Sharma have argued that running a liquor shop within the temple premises will cause trouble to devotees during the month of Shravan. The liquor shop adjacent to the temple should be removed immediately so that devotees can worship Deity Shiva during Shravan.

1. The petitioner had lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Excise, Ayodhya; but it was rejected on the grounds that the Excise Department would suffer financial loss if they closed the shop. (Take action against those running liquor shops inside the temple premises, and also those in the administration who support this to earn a revenue – Editor).

2. The PIL also demanded strict action against the officials involved in permitting the concerned liquor shop.

3. A bench of Justice Sangeeta Chandra and Justice Sriprakash Singh sought a personal affidavit from the District Excise Officer, Ayodhya, regarding the procedure followed for the mandatory measurement of 100 m. The next hearing of this case will be held on 31st July.
