Tumakuru Municipal in Karnataka to demolish a temple to build commercial complex

Strong resistance from the public

Tumakuru City Corporation

Tumakuru (Karnataka) – The Tumakuru Municipal has planned to demolish Shri Siddhivinayak temple here and build a large shopping complex (mall) on the site. The plan, which was scrapped during the BJP Government, has been taken up again after the Congress came to power.

1. MLAs, political leaders and pro-Hindu organisations have strongly opposed this decision of the municipal and have demanded that the plan be scrapped. In this regard, pro-Hindu activists under the leadership of MLA Jyoti Ganesh have given a statement to the District authorities.

2. Tumakuru Municipal and ‘Agricultural Produce Market Committee’ (APMC) came forward to implement this plan 2 years ago. The public expressed strong opposition when an attempt was made to demolish Shri Siddhivinayak temple. The plan was scrapped subsequently.

Editorial Perspective

If there stood a mosque in place of a temple, would the Tumakuru Municipal have taken a similar decision ? What else can be expected in a State governed by Congress ?
