President Murmu approves Waqf (Amendment) Bill

After passing of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill with a majority in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, President Draupadi Murmu has approved it. The Union Government has issued a notice about passing of the Bill and will issue a separate notice about the date of implementation of the Bill.

Congress MP Mohammad Javed, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Akhil Bharatiya Musalman Ekata Sangh’s MP Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP’s MLA Amanatullah Khan have challenged this Bill in the Supreme Court through their respective petitions. They say that the Bill discriminates against Muslims and even violates their fundamental rights.

New Delhi – On 2nd April at 2.30 a.m., Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha after a debate for more than 12 hours. In the Rajya Sabha, the debate continued for over 12 hours and on 3rd April at 2.30 a.m. the Bill got passed with 128 against 95 votes. This Bill was sent to President Draupadi Murmu for approval.

The Rajya Sabha work continued till 4 a.m. even after the Waqf (Amendment) Bill  was passed. Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar said it was a ‘rare occasion’ that the House dispersed at 4.02 am to meet again at 11 a.m. on the same day.

After the Waqf (Amendment) Bill was passed in both the Houses, Prime Minister posted on X, “The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency and inclusive growth.
