Congress benefitted from the campaign of ‘BJP will end reservation’
New Delhi – The issue of reservation and “Saving the Constitution” which was one of the core campaign points of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha elections managed to leave a visible impact on the performance of the two national parties, the BJP and the Congress. During the Lok Sabha election campaign, Rahul Gandhi continuously claimed that if the BJP came back to power, it would end the reservation for backward classes. As a result, Congress comfortably pocketed 32 seats belonging to Scheduled Castes and Tribes. In the last elections, Congress won only nine seats from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. BJP had to lose 24 seats from Scheduled Castes and Tribes this year.
After the caste-wise census conducted in Bihar, the demand came forward that such a census should be conducted in many states. The ‘INDI alliance demanded that such a census be conducted nationwide. This became a big strategy against the BJP.
