Wave of anger among devout Hindus in Manipur

Imphal (Manipur) – Congress leader Lamtinthang Haokip, residing in Kangpokpi in the State, shared a post on ‘X’ in regards to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Manipur. In the post, he depicted Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah as Shriram and Lakshman respectively, while showing a naked portrayal of Sita Mata with ‘Manipur’ inscribed on her head. Haokip recalled the alleged stripping and gang-rape of a Christian Kuki woman by Meitei on 3rd May 2023.

This portrayal sparked widespread outrage among the Hindu community in the State, prompting them to express their opposition to Haokip’s actions. Consequently, in response to mounting criticism from Hindus, Haokip removed the post. Devout Hindus from Imphal informed the representative of ‘Sanatan Prabhat’ about the incident, stating, “This individual consistently writes disparagingly about Hindus and its Deities. Furthermore, he targets the Hindu Meitei community and endeavours to sow discord between the Christian Kuki and Hindu Meitei communities.”
