40 thousand Hindus were massacred in Pakistan’s Sukkur in 1939

Mumbai – It is known that pre-independence, places like Noakhali, Moplah, etc., witnessed large-scale massacre of Hindus; however, the massacre of Hindus in Sukkur (Sindh), in 1939, was even more horrifying. This massacre was deliberately kept hidden from Hindus. Sukkur is now in Pakistan.

Massacre due to Hindu dominance

At that time, 40,000 of 70,000 Sukkur residents were Hindus. Since Hindus were in the majority, the administration and important departments were naturally controlled by Hindus. This didn’t sit well with the Muslims. They initiated violence against Hindus, including murder, land grabbing, theft, and extortion, using these means to assert Islamic dominance and started the massacre of Hindus. On 13^thOctober 1939, under the leadership of Syed, Muslims protested, claiming an existing building to be a mosque. Even though the Indian Archaeological Department clarified it wasn’t a mosque, Muslims gained control over it. Later, on 1^stNovember 1939, under the pretext of the protest, Muslims assassinated Bhakt Kavar Ram, a Hindu saint. On 19^thNovember 1939, Syed and other Muslim protesters were arrested by the British Police. From 20^thNovember onwards, Muslims in Sukkur started systematically murdering Hindus. Within a day, thousands of Hindus were killed. By the second day, only 90 Hindus remained out of the initial 40,000. All Hindus in nearby Guzarji village were also massacred. At this time, 1500 Muslims were also arrested, including Muslim League Secretary Pir Ali Muhammad Rashidi. All this information was revealed in an interview given by Muhammad Rashidi.

Barchundi Dargah, Hub of Hindu conversions

The main instigators behind this massacre were Syed, Abdullah Harood, Pir Ali Muhammad Rashidi, the Maulvi of Barchundi Dargah, and the thugs of Jakrani Baloch group. Barchundi Dargah, led by Miyan Mitthu, was the prime suspect. Under his leadership, thousands of Hindu girls have been forcibly converted, married off, or murdered in Pakistan.
