High Court of Madhya Pradesh reserves the verdict on Bhojshala survey in Dhar, MP

Hindu party has demanded a scientific investigation into the survey conducted in 1902

Indore (MP) – The Hindu community’s demand for a survey of the historical Bhojshala, situated in the Dhar District of the State, has regained momentum. On 19th February, the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court heard 7 Public Interest Litigations (PILs) related to this matter. During the proceedings, the Hindu party emphasised the need for a fresh survey, referring the Archaeological Survey of India’s investigation of Bhojshala in 1902. The Court has reserved its decision on the issue.

1. Hindu party’s lawyer, Pujya Hari Shankar Jain, asserted that the 1902 survey of Bhojshala revealed Indian architecture, depictions of Vishnu, Hindu symbols, Sanskrit inscriptions, and more. He stressed the necessity for a thorough scientific investigation to bring clarity to the matter. The petition advocates for the rightful regular worship access for Hindus at Bhojshala, as currently, the Muslim community also offers prayers there, and the petition seeks restrictions on their namaz prayers.

2. The Muslim party has conveyed that the Court proceedings for this case are ongoing in Jabalpur. Hence, the Indore bench of MP High Court has requested information regarding the details of those proceedings.

Chronology of events at Bhojshala:

1902: Lord Curzon’s visit to Dhar and Mandu led to the allocation of Rs 50,000 for the maintenance and repair of the Bhojshala. During this visit, a survey of the site was also conducted.

1951: Bhojshala was officially declared a National Monument. A Government document from that time explicitly mentions both Bhojshala and Kamal Maula Masjid.

1995: Amidst controversy, the administration granted permission for Muslims to offer Friday prayers, while Hindus were permitted to perform puja on Vasant Panchami. Unfortunately, tensions escalated when Vasant Panchami coincided with a Friday, resulting in aggressive actions by some Muslims against Hindus. In 2013, the situation intensified, leading to Police lathi charge against Hindus. Subsequently, Hindus were allowed to worship every Tuesday, and Muslims were permitted to pray on Fridays.
