Special report on Shriram Lalla

Saraswati Devi

Ranchi (Jharkhand) – Saraswati Devi, an 85-year-old woman from Jharkhand, is set to end her three-decade-long vow of silence (maun vrat) on 22nd January, coinciding with the inauguration of the Shriram temple in Ayodhya. She has reached Ayodhya to attend the inauguration ceremony.

Saraswati Devi’s family said that she initiated her maun vrat on the day of the Babri Masjid’s demolition in 1992, committing to break it only upon the construction of the Shriram temple. She was inspired by Mahant Nritya Gopal Das. She is popularly known as ‘Mauni Mata’ in Ayodhya. She communicated primarily through sign language, occasionally writing complex sentences on paper.
