Khalistani involvement in Canadian politics impacted India-Canada ties

Clarifies Foreign Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar

New Delhi – “The issue at heart is the fact that in Canadian politics, these Khalistani forces have been given a lot of space and have been allowed to indulge in activities which I think are damaging to the relationship, clearly not in India’s interest, and not in Canada’s interest either. But unfortunately, that is the state of their politics”, said Foreign Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar in an interview given to the ANI news agency.

We will not deal (with Pakistan) on the basis of terms that they set

Regarding Pakistan Dr Jaishankar said, “What Pakistan was trying to do, not now but over multiple decades, was really to use cross-border terrorism to bring India to the table. That, in essence, was its core policy. We have made that irrelevant by not playing that game now. After all, at the end of the day, a neighbour is a neighbour, but it is that we will not deal on the basis of terms that they set where the practice of terrorism is deemed as legitimate and effective in order to bring you to the table”.

Dealing with China based on Sardar Patel’s policy

About China Dr Jaishankar said that Nehru worked on the ‘China First’ policy. Nehru and Sardar Patel were already at odds over ‘how to respond to China’.  Modi Government is working in the stream of realism started by Sardar Patel in dealing with China. Unless such relationships are recognized based on mutuality, it is difficult for such relationships to progress or last.

Leaders of many countries of the world want to visit India

While responding to the question if India is imposing its own thoughts on the world, Foreign Minister Dr Jaishankar said, “I do not think we are imposing our views on anyone. India is viewed in a more relevant light. Leaders of many countries want to visit India. Explaining why the Prime Minister cannot visit every country in the world every year is a big challenge in front of me as the Foreign Minister. Everyone wants PM Modi to visit their country”.
