The famed History of the Sceptre (Sengol)

The history of the Sengol in India can be traced back to ancient times. The sceptre is called the ‘Sengol’ in Tamil. It means ‘supporting the truth’. The first confirmed use of the sceptre was by the early Mauryan Empire. The Mauryan emperors used the sceptre to show their authority over their vast empire. The Gupta Empire, Chola Empire and the Vijayanagara Empire also used the sceptre. The British took the sceptre from Tamil Nadu while transferring power to the Indians. In the year 1947, the British handed over this sceptre to the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It was kept in a museum in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Justice and impartial governance are expected from those to whom the sceptre is handed over.
