If people have become used to taking the law into their hands to punish rapists, who is responsible for it ? It is a sign of people strongly feeling that justice is denied to them in the present system ! It is a failure of rulers from all parties ! |
Agartala (Tripura) – A 45-year-old man named Ratan Acharjee, who was trying to rape a minor girl at Debnathpara in Gandacherra of Dhalai District, was tied to a tree and brutally beaten up. He fell unconscious. The Police took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors. Acharjee was unemployed. He had gone through rigorous imprisonment for 8 years in a murder case.

A five-year-old girl had gone to Debnathpara in Gandacherra with her mother to attend a religious ceremony. Acharjee took the girl, lured her, took her to a nearby forest, and tried to rape her. The girl started shouting for help when her family and local people rushed to the place of the incident to rescue her. By then, however, Acharjee had fled the scene. The villagers tried to find him the whole night but to no avail. As per the information given by the Police, a group of women protested the incident and stopped traffic on the Gandacherra-Amarpur highway. On the 16th of March, the accused was seen by the local villagers in a neighbouring village. Later, a mob of women beat him up.
The Police have so far questioned 4 persons in this context, but nobody has been taken into custody.
