Kerala HC rejects the plea to save places of worship from land acquisition for the widening of the National Highway

God will forgive us – Kerala HC

Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – The Kerala HC quashed the plea to save places of worship from land acquisition for widening the National Highway 66 in Kollam in Kerala. The Court observed, ‘For the development of the National Highways in the State if religious institutions are affected, God will forgive us’. The petitioners pleaded that National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was not following the directions of the State Government about the alignment of the National Highway. The petitioners grieved that there was a scam in the alignment itself and pleaded for Court intervention. There are two Temples and a Mosque on the left of the road and a private Mosque to the right where land needs to be acquired.

The Government of Kerala and the NHAI have claimed that there was no change made to the alignment, to favour any place of worship. Efforts are being made to protect the nearby religious places based on rules, but all the suggestions cannot be accepted.
