Muslims attack Hindus in Nepal; one Hindu youth killed in police firing

Kathmandu (Nepal) – A Hindu youth was killed in police firing during riots allegedly carried out by religious fanatics from the Muslim community in Sunsari district of Nepal, which borders India. Several people, including police personnel, were injured in the violence. Following the riots, the administration imposed restrictions for an indefinite period in certain areas.

According to the police, on the night of 26 July, Hindus and Muslims had organised separate programmes in the Kaptanganj area of Devganj Rural Municipality. A dispute arose over the use of loudspeakers and the display of religious flags, which later escalated into violence. While attempting to bring the situation under control, security personnel opened fire, in which 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta was killed.

Sunsari district is situated in south-eastern Nepal, close to the Indian state of Bihar. The region is an important trade and transport corridor between the two countries.

Editorial Perspective

  • Despite Hindus constituting 81 per cent of Nepal's population and Muslims only 5 per cent, Muslims are attacking Hindus. This is a matter of shame for Hindus !
  • Would Hindus in the Islamic countries of Pakistan and Bangladesh ever dare to attack Muslims ? And if they did, would they remain alive ?
