Daughter-in-law of Andhra Pradesh YSR Congress leader Jogi Ramesh files police complaint alleging domestic violence

  • Alleges that the family's Christian identity was concealed before the marriage

  • Claims the fragrance of incense offered before the Deities was compared to the stench of a dead body

Amaravati (Andhra Pradesh) – A case has been registered against former Andhra Pradesh Minister and senior YSR Congress (Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress – Youth, Labour and Farmers Congress) leader Jogi Ramesh and his family after his daughter-in-law, Meghna, lodged a complaint alleging dowry harassment, physical assault and domestic violence.

In her complaint, Meghna also made another serious allegation. She stated that, at the time of the marriage, Jogi Ramesh’s family had represented themselves as a Hindu family, and the marriage was solemnised according to Hindu customs and traditions. However, after arriving at her marital home, she gradually realised that the family was, in fact, Christian. She alleged that this fact had been deliberately concealed from her and that it amounted to a serious act of deception.

She further alleged that, on one occasion, while she was performing worship at home and had lit incense before the Deities, her in-laws became angry. According to her complaint, they mocked the fragrance of the incense and compared it to the stench of a dead body. When she objected, she alleged that she was threatened and warned not to reveal family matters or the truth about their religion to her parents. She further alleged that she was threatened with serious consequences if she did not remain silent.

The police have assured that the case will be investigated impartially and that strict action will be taken if the accused are found guilty.

Editorial Perspective

  • It had earlier been claimed that nearly 25 per cent of Hindus in Andhra Pradesh have converted to Christianity while concealing this fact publicly. This incident appears to substantiate that claim.
  •  Since YSR Congress Party President Jagan Mohan Reddy is also a Christian, it would not be incorrect if someone were to say that leaders in his party are Christians as well.
