Bangladesh strongly opposes repatriation of infiltrators at the India-Bangladesh border !

Threatens to open fire; Bangladeshi civilians brandish weapons !

Shribhumi (Assam) – A major confrontation broke out on the night of 26 June at the India-Bangladesh border when Indian authorities attempted to send Bangladeshi infiltrators back across the border. During the incident, personnel of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) came face to face. The BGB reportedly pointed firearms towards the Indian side, while a large number of Bangladeshi civilians gathered at the border carrying weapons, sticks and knives. Threats were also issued to the BSF personnel. The entire incident took place in the Bilbari border area, where tension continues to prevail.

The confrontation began when a group of Bangladeshi nationals was being sent towards New Pallathal on the Bangladesh side of the border from Bilbari. The BGB strongly objected and refused to allow the group to enter Bangladesh. Bangladeshi residents from nearby border villages also gathered in support of the BGB, carrying knives, sticks and rods. They also brandished weapons towards the Indian side. Using loudspeakers, BGB personnel repeatedly asked the BSF to withdraw and warned that if the situation deteriorated, they would have to open fire.

After the standoff, which lasted several hours, security personnel from both sides remained deployed along the border. However, no firing took place and no casualties were reported. The BSF personnel exercised restraint and kept the situation under control.

Subsequently, additional reinforcements were deployed by both sides, while the Assam Police and the local administration were placed on alert. No official statement has yet been issued regarding the incident.

Editorial Perspective

Given the continued resistance to sending Bangladeshi infiltrators back to their own country, India must now adopt a firm stance.
