Sangli, Maharashtra (27 June) – Local Hindu families in Bisur village in the district are living under a cloud of fear due to religious fanatics from other States and outside districts who frequent the village mosque. These fanatics have allegedly been harassing Hindus living near the mosque, making obscene gestures at Hindu women and hurling abusive remarks against Hindu Dharma. Unable to bear the harassment any longer, 10 Hindu families in the village are preparing to leave their homes and flee the village.

Harassment of Hindus under the cover of the mosque

Groups of around 20 people from outside the village and from other States have been arriving at the mosque in Bisur village. This has endangered the peace and security of Hindus living nearby. Local Muslims Sheikh, Nadaf and Syed, along with Hafizs from other States, harass Hindus by speaking loudly inside the mosque and playing songs at high volume on their mobile phones. These religious fanatics also make obscene gestures at Hindu women and girls passing through the area around the mosque and use extremely abusive language against Hindu Dharma.

“If you are disturbed, close your doors and windows and stay inside !” – Threat to Hindus

When the affected Hindu families objected to this arrogant behaviour, the fanatics allegedly threatened them, saying, “If you are disturbed, close your doors and windows and stay inside.” Despite repeated complaints by Hindus to village leaders, political leaders and other prominent persons, no action was taken and their complaints were ignored.

Investigate the outsiders ! – Demand by Hindu Ekata Andolan

Taking serious note of the situation, office-bearers of the Hindu Ekata Andolan have taken an aggressive stand and demanded immediate intervention from the District Police Chief.

State President of Hindu Ekata Andolan and former MLA Nitin Shinde said, “Who are the suspicious people coming to the mosque in Bisur village from other States and districts ? A thorough investigation must be conducted immediately. Their presence could create a serious law-and-order problem in the village. The District Police Chief should personally look into the matter, provide protection to the affected Hindu families and prevent their migration. If the Police fail to take legal action in time, office-bearers of the Hindu Ekata Andolan will deal with that Muslim community in their own way.”
