Guwahati (Assam) – The Uniform Civil Code Bill was introduced in the Assam Legislative Assembly on 25 May. Discussion on the Bill will take place on 27 May. If the Bill is passed, Assam will become the third State in the country to enact such a law. Earlier, Uttarakhand and Gujarat had passed this law. In addition, the law has been in force in Goa since the Portuguese era.
According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Scheduled Tribes (Hills) and Scheduled Tribes (Plains) will remain outside the purview of this law. Traditional religious rites, customs, and rituals will also be exempted from it.
