Do not grant parole to those accused in sexual exploitation cases

Chief Minister’s directives in Cabinet meeting

(“Parole” refers to the conditional release of prisoners for a limited period based on good behaviour.)

Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai – Devendra Fadnavis has issued clear instructions to the Law and Justice Department not to grant parole to those accused in sexual exploitation cases. He stated that “80 to 90 percent of accused in such cases are repeat offenders who had previously been released on parole and then committed the same crime again. Therefore, they should not be granted parole.”

The Chief Minister gave these directions during a Cabinet meeting in the backdrop of a rape and murder case involving a 4-year-old girl in Nasrapur (Pune).

He further added that a law addressing this issue had been enacted by the government during the period 2014 to 2019 and was in force for 2–3 years, but was later struck down by the court. He has now directed that a similar law be enacted again.
