Railway Management Evasive about Serving ‘Zatka’ Meat to Hindu Passengers during Journey

*Why Hindus are forced to consume ‘Halal’ meat ? – Dr Sachin Bodhani, a passenger

New Delhi – It has been found that Hindus are served ‘Halal’ meat without their permission in railway canteens and on Kamakhya-Howrah Vande Bharat Express. Dr Sachin Bodhani, a passenger, has written to the railway minister in this context demanding that Hindus should be given an option of ‘Zatka’ meat. The reply given by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is evasive and it seems that Hindus demand has been ignored.

Details of Dr Bodhani’s letter

Dr Bodhani has explained that the procedure of ‘Halal’ is related to a particular religion and forcing it on others in public places is violation of Indian Constitution; besides jeopardising Hindus’ religious rights. Hindus form a large section of passengers travelling on trains like ‘Vande Bharat’ and it is their right to get the alternative of ‘Zatka’ meat.

Reply by IRCTC and lack of clarity in the reply

IRCTC’s group General Manager while replying to Dr Bodhani’s letter has stated that the food provided by the railways is as per the rules under the Government’s Food Safety Act. Instead of directly answering, a technical reply has been given that they follow the Government rules. Though the railway administration has mentioned about food safety, it is tight-lipped about religious sentiments of Hindus and compulsion of ‘Halal’. It seems that the railway management is trying to buy time on the issue raised about Hindus’ identity, by referring to the Government rules.

Editorial Perspective

The process of ‘Halal’ is related to Islamic traditions. It is violation of religious freedom under Articles 25 and 27 of the Constitution to force ‘Halal’ on Hindus. Hindus should now raise their voice against it.
