
Panipat (Haryana): Mahendra Chawla, a key witness in the case involving Sant Shri P.P. Asaram Bapu, has been arrested by police on charges of fraud. His brother and nephew have also been taken into custody in connection with the case. According to police, Chawla allegedly blackmailed a village sarpanch and extorted ₹70 lakh, and was reportedly demanding an additional ₹80 lakh. Action was initiated following a complaint. In 2013, when allegations of sexual assault involving a minor were made against Asaram Bapu, Chawla had testified against him in the case. He had also stayed for several years at Asaram Bapu’s ashrams in Ahmedabad and Surat.
