Karnataka : Hindu girl dies by suicide after harassment by Nadaph

Bagalkote (Karnataka) – A 19-year-old Hindu girl, Bhumika Tippannavar, residing in Sector 48, died by suicide by hanging, allegedly due to harassment by a youth named Nadaph. Local devout Hindu organisations have alleged that this is a case of ‘love jihad’.

According to reports, Bhumika was in a relationship with Nadaph, a rickshaw driver. Bhumika’s aunt, Laxmi, told the media that Nadaph would park his rickshaw in front of their house and repeatedly call Bhumika, pressuring her to speak with him. They would talk late into the night, sometimes until 12 or 1 a.m. He allegedly harassed her by insisting that although he did not wish to marry her, she should live with him. Distressed by this continued harassment, Bhumika died by suicide. The family has demanded justice.

Nadaph made Bhumika wear a hijab when taking her out – Devout Hindu organisations Kumarswamy Hiremath, a leader of the Hindu Jagran Vedike, stated that this is a case of ‘love jihad’. He alleged that Nadaph was pressuring Bhumika to convert to Islam and that during Ramzan, he would make her wear a hijab or burkha when taking her out.

Editorial Perspective

  • What else can be expected in Karnataka, where the Congress Government is in power, which is being compared to a regime like Pakistan by critics ?
  • Why are those who dismissed ‘The Kerala Story 2’ as propaganda and allegedly kept Hindu girls in the dark now silent ?
