Angered at the Govt, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker storms out of the House

  • Speaker expresses anger over the Govt’s stance of not answering questions raised by MLAs

Bengaluru (Karnataka) – Karnataka Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader adjourned the Assembly and left, saying that he would not conduct the proceedings until the concerned Ministers and Secretaries gave an explanation why they did not respond in writing to the questions raised by the MLAs. Khader’s action has caused a big embarrassment to the Government. Speaker Khader was very angry at the stand taken by the Ministers and the Government. The Speaker had been repeatedly advising the Government to provide written responses. Still, on March 16th, out of 230 questions, only 84 were answered by the Government. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, R. Ashok,slammed the Government over this.

1. Speaker Khadar said, “I have stated this point very clearly. The session does not run for theMinisters; it runs for the MLAs. It is not possible for everyone to ask starred questions. Only 15 questions can be answered in a day. The Government is required to give written answers to the remaining questions; but they are not being given. Why should MLAs come to the Housethen ?”

2. ‘Questions are not answered, Ministers do not come to the House on time. Despite my instructions 4 times in a row, there has been no improvement. This attitude of the Government is not right. If this is the case, how can the House run?’, the Speaker expressed his anger.

3. Speaker Khadar got up from the chair and leftsaying, ‘Until the Minister and the Secretary explain this, the House will not be run’.

4. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tried to convince Speaker U.T. Khader, who had expressed dissatisfaction with the Government’s administration.

5. Speaker Khadar informed that a meeting was held with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Leader of the Opposition in the Speaker’s Chamber, and it has been decided to answer the questions of the members.
