We have never agitated for the implementation of a UCC in India : Shashikant Patil, Communist Party of India

Comrade Govind Pansare Murder Case

Kolhapur : “The workers’ organisation AITUC and the Communist Party of India have never held any agitation demanding the implementation of a UCC (Uniform Civil Code) in India. In our meetings, there was never any discussion about bringing a Uniform Civil Code”, said Shashikant Patil, former district president of the Communist Party of India and a witness in the murder case of Comrade Govind Pansare.

Patil gave this response while answering questions during cross-examination by Advocate Somnath Bharamgunde. The hearing in the Govind Pansare murder case is being conducted before District and Sessions Judge S. S. Tambe.

On this occasion, Advocate Sameer Patwardhan, Advocate Virendra Ichalkaranjikar, and Advocate Nagesh Joshi appeared on behalf of the defence, while Advocate Shivajirao Rane appeared for the prosecution. The next hearing in this case will take place on 8 April 2026.

Editorial Perspective

Communists, that is, socialists, do not believe in any religion. In short, for them all religions are equal. On the other hand, although India is secular, there is no Uniform Civil Code. In such a situation, communists should have raised their voice against this constitutional imbalance. Since this does not happen, it must be said that their communism itself is fake.
