A Hindu woman doctor at AIIMS Bhopal commits suicide after alleged harassment by department head Dr Parvez !

Human Rights Commission seeks explanation

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) – It has come to light that a Hindu woman doctor working as an Assistant Professor at AIIMS here has committed suicide. It has been alleged that Dr Srushti took her life by consuming an overdose of an anaesthetic drug after being unable to bear the continuous mental harassment and humiliation by Dr Parvez, a department head at AIIMS. Taking cognisance of this serious matter, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the Bhopal Police, the AIIMS administration and the Health Ministry, seeking a detailed report.

1. Before committing suicide, Dr Srushti had lodged complaints three times with the hospital administration against Dr Parvez; however, it has been alleged that instead of taking action against the accused doctor, the management attempted to suppress the matter. (Therefore, the strictest action must also be taken against the AIIMS management, which has effectively acted as a silent accomplice along with Dr Parvez ! – Editor)

2. Due to the harassment by Dr Parvez and the administration’s neglect, the woman doctor became mentally distressed and ultimately took this extreme step.

3. According to the complaint received by the Commission, Dr Parvez had been continuously insulting Dr Srushti. Drawing attention to the seriousness of the case, Priyank Kanungo of the National Human Rights Commission stated that a doctor committing suicide in such a manner raises serious questions about the system. The Commission has asked the Bhopal Police and the AIIMS administration why no action was taken against the accused despite repeated complaints.

4. A demand has been made for a fair investigation into the case and for strict action against those found guilty.
