Brutal attack on Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad students : Several injured

New Delhi — Tension gripped Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after a violent clash erupted around midnight on 22 February between communist student organisations and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The confrontation escalated into stone-pelting and physical assaults, leaving several students seriously injured and spreading fear in the campus.
The unrest comes in the wake of recent remarks by JNU Vice-Chancellor Shantishree Dhulipudi Pandit regarding Dalit students. Demanding an apology and resignation, Left-leaning student groups had launched an agitation, during which the violence broke out.

With the Central Govt's pledge to eliminate Naxalism by March 2026, it is high time to address and curb 'Student Naxalism' within campus walls.

1. Allegations surfaced that ABVP students attacked the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union camp and pelted stones, injuring several. Countering this, JNU ABVP Joint Secretary Vaibhav Meena stated that 300 to 400 masked individuals were roaming across the campus, allegedly targeting students quietly studying in the library and reading rooms. Armed with sticks, they reportedly tried to forcibly shut down classes, compelling frightened students to take refuge in washrooms and lifts.
2. According to ABVP, a student named Vijay was assaulted by a mob of nearly 100 to 150 people. Iron rods, knives, stones, and sticks were allegedly used. The most shocking incident occurred near the School of Social Sciences, where biotechnology student Prateek Bhardwaj was attacked. Before being brutally beaten, fire-extinguisher powder was thrown into his eyes. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and is serious.
Editorial PerspectivesJNU has long functioned as a hub of Leftist agitation. While the Central Government has declared its resolve to eradicate Naxalism from the country by March 2026, decisive action is also needed to curb the growing menace of ‘student Naxalism’ within JNU. |
