New Delhi – In the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri violence cases related to the 1984 Sikh riots, a Delhi court has acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar. Two people had died in this violence. While delivering the verdict, the court clearly stated that sufficient evidence could not be found in the case and that the charges against Sajjan Kumar could not be proved. Consequently, he has been acquitted of all charges in this case.

However, in another case related to the murder of Sikhs in Saraswati Vihar during the 1984 riots, Sajjan Kumar had earlier been sentenced to life imprisonment. As a result, he is currently lodged in prison.

In connection with the 1984 riots, several cases were registered across the country. Sajjan Kumar’s name had surfaced in the Janakpuri and Vikaspuri violence cases as well; however, the court has now acquitted him of all charges in these cases.

Editorial Perspective

A judicial system delivering a verdict in such a sensitive matter after 42 years raises serious questions about delays in justice and their impact on victims and society at large.
