“I only shared my personal experiences” : AR Rahman

A.R. Rahman’s clarification after claiming ‘Chhava divisive film’

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) – Well-known music composer A.R. Rahman had recently stated in an interview with ‘BBC Asian Network’ that “ ‘Chhava’ is a divisive film.” He further alleged that religious intolerance is growing within the Hindu film industry. Following strong public backlash, Rahman is now attempting to justify and dilute his remarks.

Rahman claimed, “It was never my intention to hurt anyone or spread hatred. As a composer, my role is to unite people, not to divide them. I merely expressed an opinion based on my personal experiences. I do not harbour hatred, and I have always supported unity. At times, intentions are misunderstood; however, serving society through music has always been my purpose.”

What Had Rahman Said Earlier?

In his interview to ‘BBC Asian Network’, Rahman had said, “‘Chhava’ is a divisive film. Although the essence of its story is valour, I believe the film benefited more because of its divisive elements. I even asked the directors why they needed me for this project, and they replied that they wanted only me. Even if a film is good, people are certainly wise enough not to get carried away by it. Do you think people are influenced by such films? In my view, people possess an inner conscience that can differentiate between the truth and distortion.”
