Municipal Corporation Elections in Maharashtra

Mumbai – Complaints have been received from different parts of Maharashtra by the State Election Commission (SEC) that the ink applied on the finger before casting vote is getting wiped off. This time a ‘Marker’ was used to apply ink on fingers at the time of voting; but Ms Rupali Chakankar, the chairperson of the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, has complained to the SEC that the marker’s ink immediately got wiped off at many places. Mr Sachin Sainath Durge the secretary of ‘Yuva Sena’ under Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray’s party also showed on media erasing of the ink on his finger after voting.

Getting power by resorting to unethical means is not an election – Raj Thackeray, President, MNS

The Government has decided to win the elections. It is the repetition of what happened at the time of State Assembly elections; but we shall not let such things recur. Earlier, ink used to be applied on the finger after voting. In this election, a marker pen is used to make a mark on the finger. The mark is getting wiped off by using ‘sanitizer’. Winning election by resorting to unethical means cannot be called an election.
… then oil-paint should have been used ! – Devendra Fadanvis, CM

Everything regarding election is decided by the election commission. Marker has been used even earlier. In case of doubt, the election commission should use another pen. I don’t mind even the use of oil-paint; but accusing SEC is not proper.
Re-voting by wiping off ink is not possible; action will be taken later on those spreading confusion – SEC
Creating confusion amongst voters by wiping off ink applied on finger at the time of voting is an illegal act. SEC explained that necessary action would be taken in case a person comes back for voting after erasing the ink on his finger.
One cannot cast vote again by erasing the ink on one’s finger. Necessary precautions in this regard have already been taken. A noting is made in the records after a voter casts his vote; therefore, it is difficult to erase ink and go for re-casting vote. |
Marker being used for elections since 2011
In November 2011, it was decided to apply ink on voters’ finger and since then, marker is being used for applying ink on voters’ fingers in the local body elections. As per the orders in this connection, dark marks should be made with the ink on voters’ fingers using marker pens. Instructions have already been given to apply ink on the nail and above the nail on finger by rubbing 3-4 times. SEC has appealed to voters against erasing the ink.
