Mumbai – Voting for elections to 21 municipal corporations across the state is being held today, 15 January. Polling is underway from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm. For this election, a total of 39 lakh polling booths have been set up across the state, with 3.48 crore registered voters. In view of the polling, extensive police security has been deployed across the state. Counting of votes will take place tomorrow, on 16 January.
As all parties have formed alliances and fronts based on local political equations, the possibility of clashes on a large scale, similar to those seen in nagarpanchayat and municipal council elections, is being predicted. Since municipal corporation elections are being held after a gap of nearly eight years, following the 2017 polls, political parties have entered the fray with full force.
BJP focused on increasing Hindu voter turnout
The Mahayuti had gained significantly from the increased voter turnout in the Assembly elections. In this background, the BJP is making special efforts to ensure that Hindus come out in large numbers to vote in the municipal corporation elections as well.
A crucial election for Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray and MNS
In Mumbai, the Thackeray name carries special significance. However, Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray did not achieve notable success in the Assembly elections, while the MNS failed to get even a single MLA elected. Therefore, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation election has become a do-or-die battle for both these parties.
