New Delhi – New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani had written a letter of sympathy regarding terrorist Umar Khalid undergoing imprisonment in the matter of the Delhi riots in 2020. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal warned in a press conference on 9 January while reacting strongly, stated that the people’s representatives should respect the independence of the judiciary in other democratic countries. He said that Mamdani should focus on doing his job.

In December, after meeting with Umar Khalid’s parents in New York, Mamdani gave them a handwritten letter for Umar. While addressing the letter to Umar, he mentioned that he often remembered his views on bitterness and his words explaining its importance.
