Supreme Court seeks responses from States on ‘Anti-Love Jihad’ law!

New Delhi – Several States, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, have enacted a law to curb ‘Love Jihad’ and forced religious conversions. Petitions challenging the constitutional validity of these laws are presently pending before the Supreme Court.

At the same time, Javed Malik, National President of the All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz, has filed a petition in support of these laws. The matter is scheduled for hearing on January 28. The Supreme Court has also directed all concerned States to submit their responses within three weeks, specifically explaining the necessity of the ‘Love Jihad’ laws.

The petitions challenging the legislation have been filed by organisations such as Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and Citizens for Justice and Peace. The petitioners opposing the law contend that there is a possibility of its misuse and that it could adversely affect religious freedom and individual rights.

The Supreme Court will hear arguments from all parties before arriving at a decision. These petitions challenging the law and Javed Malik’s petition supporting the law will be heard together.
