Include Shrimadbhagawadgeeta in the school syllabus

Union Minister H D Kumarswamy writes to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Bangalore (Karnataka) – Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy, on Friday, requested for the inclusion of the sacred Hindu scripture Shrimadbhagawadgeeta in school curricula across the country. Kumaraswamy in his letter said, the inclusion of selected shlokas from the Geeta in the curriculum will inculcate ethics, clarity of thought and character among the students.

He further added,

“Bharat has been the land of saints, wisdom, and enduring cultural values since ancient times.” Sanatana Dharma upholds the universal ideal of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (The World is one family). In his eighth incarnation as Shrikrushna, Bhagawan Vishnu imparted the eternal wisdom of the Shrimadbhagawadgeeta, which emphasises ‘Nishkam Karma’ (action without desire for personal gain) and the importance of performing one’s duty with sincerity and dedication.

These values are of immense relevance in the present global environment. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Gita recitation programme during his visit to Krishna Matha in Udupi; this has helped spread the core principles of Sanatana Dharma. This programme provided an opportunity to recite the Geeta and draw inspiration from it.

Local leaders and parents have also demanded that school curricula should include teachings from The Geeta. He concluded by stating that it is important that children be introduced to not just songs but also to Ramayan and Mahabharat along with the Geeta.
