‘Vande Mataram’ written only for Hindus : Claims DMK MP A Raja

New Delhi – Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay wrote ‘Vande Mataram’ in his novel titled ‘Anandamath’ only for Hindus, alleged DMK’s MP, A Raja, during the discussions held on ‘Vande Mataram’ in Parliament.

Points raised by A Raja

1. The stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ are against Muslims and not against the British

‘Vande Mataram’ has been criticised from the beginning of twentieth century. Some of the stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ are not only against the British but are also against Muslims. R C Muzumdar had stated that Bankim Chandra converted patriotism into religion and religion into patriotism.

2. The Congress was giving replies to these objections. Ravindranath Tagore also expressed his opinion at the insistence of the Congress. He has stated in a letter that the whole poem, if read with its original references, can hurt sentiments of Muslims.

3. The ‘Anushasan Committee’ formed in Bengal in 1902 was aiming to get freedom through armed struggle. This committee started a drive for ‘Vande Mataram’ to get the status of the national song. It was observed in the documents seized by the British that Muslims were not allowed to join this struggle under this committee. The oath taken at the time of admission to this committee was like a holy observance for Hindus and not for Muslims. It clarifies the communal meaning of ‘Vande Mataram’.

4. During 1905-1908, ‘namaz’ used to be recited in mosques in Bengal when Hindus used to raise slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’ during their processions. In 1907, a pamphlet was distributed instructing Muslims against saying ‘Vande Mataram’ and joining the ‘Swadeshi’ movement. Such incidents rose during 1902-1915. Discussions were held even in ‘House of Commons’, the British Parliament on the increase in the communal tension due to ‘Vande Mataram’. In 1905, Mahatma Gandhi praised Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay but in 1940, he changed his stand. Gandhi had instructed that ‘Vande Mataram’ was not a communal but a political slogan and it should not be used to insult or hurt Muslims.

5. I don’t know what was the dream behind ‘Vande Mataram’ but PM Modi’s dream is Hindu Rashtra.

Editorial Perspective

Earlier, even Muslims used to raise slogans of ‘Vande Mataram’. Later, they were misled and they started to oppose ‘Vande Mataram’. Congress indirectly opposed ‘Vande Mataram’ to appease Muslims and removed the lines with reference to Shri Durgadevi from this song.
