Case of throwing a bomb at a police vehicle in 2012
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) – Two Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers — V.K. Nishad and T.C.V. Nandakumar, who are currently candidates in the Payyannur municipal council elections in Kannur district, Kerala — have been sentenced to 10 years in imprisonment for throwing a bomb at a police vehicle in 2012.
The court found both of them guilty of attempt to murder and offences under the Explosives Act. They have also been fined ₹2.5 lakh each. If they fail to pay the fine, they will have to undergo an additional one year of imprisonment.
Additional details:
- Nishad and Nandakumar are both members of the CPI(M)’s youth wing, Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI). Nishad was also a council member in the previous term of the Payyannur municipal council.
- The incident took place on 1 August 2012, after CPI(M)’s then district secretary P. Jayarajan was arrested in connection with the murder of IUML worker Ariyil Shukkoor. At that time, the two convicted workers threw bombs at a police vehicle. Fortunately, the bombs did not explode, and no lives were lost.
