“If re-elected as Chief Minister, I will bring a Uniform Civil Code!” – CM Himanta Biswa Sarma
Before the Bill was passed, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that Islam does not promote polygamy. “If this Bill is passed, you will have the opportunity to become true Muslims. This Bill is not against Islam. True Islamic followers will welcome this law. Even Islamic nations like Türkiye have banned polygamy. Pakistan, too, has an arbitration council. If I return to the Assembly as Chief Minister, I promise that the very first session will introduce a Uniform Civil Code.”
Nationwide ban on polygamy demanded – Hindu Janajagruti Samiti

Mumbai – By passing the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, Assam has taken a historic step towards protecting women’s rights and safety. This law will help curb the mental, social, and economic exploitation faced by women. On behalf of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, National Spokesperson Mr Ramesh Shinde congratulated Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and urged the Central Government to implement this law across the entire country.
Mr Shinde stated in a press release:
- Nearly 130 to 140 countries worldwide—including the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Sweden, England, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Japan—have strict laws or complete bans on polygamous marriages (polygamy).
- Although India does have certain laws pertaining to polygamy, they are not applicable to all religions. Polygamy threatens women’s freedom and destabilizes family systems. Therefore, a law like Assam’s is essential nationwide, not just within Assam.
- A stringent, Assam-like law enforced across the country would significantly strengthen women’s safety and protection.
